Grândola, Vila Moderna is an exhibition built around the artist's video-based performance piece that carries out an ironic, thought-provoking reinterpretation of the traditional song “Grândola, Vila Morena” by Portuguese protest singer-songwriter José Afonso in the light of today. The song, which was used as a signal on the morning of 25 April 1974 to set off the coup that overthrew the Estado Novo dictatorship, became a symbol for the revolution and the utopian dreams associated with it.
As Heitor Alves describes in the presentation: “± performs the expiation of this failure while also carrying out its psychoanalysis. He is a mirror of lucidity on our dysfunctions – and by rendering them readable, he affirms the possibility of our emancipation from them.”
±MaisMenos± is an intervention art project by Portuguese artist Miguel Januário which offers a critical reflection on the model of political, social and economic organisation that manages contemporary urban societies. Its programmatic expression is conceptually reduced to an equation of simplicity and opposites: more/less, positive/negative, black/white. He has been producing thought-provoking, cutting-edge work both indoors and outdoors since 2005.
