Established in 2010 and consolidated in its present form in 2013, Underdogs works with a diversified roster of Portuguese and international artists connected with the urban inspired contemporary art universe, fostering the development of close relationships between creators, the public, and the city with the aim of promoting art as an everyday experience.
Broken Vision introduces a new series of works – created especially for the exhibition – where fragmentation, irony, and social critique converge. The figures that populate his compositions evoke masked characters, reminiscent of theatre or caricature. Executed with great technical precision, the paintings stem from manual methods such as dotwork, referencing photocopies and screen-printing processes, evoking the aesthetics of posters and graphic reproducibility. Through cut-out eyes and mouths, Paul Insect builds a visual commentary on information overload and the noise of appearances, tackling themes such as surveillance, identity, and representation. At the same time, he restores the imperfect charm of the handmade gesture, which grants his compositions a distinctive and tactile dimension.
