The pieces showcased here are part of a larger body of works that the artist has been developing over the last two years.
The channel through which a message is transmitted is equal to the meaning – starting from this point, Fiumani developed a series of canvases using plastic waste as a tool to paint in two dimensions.
The artist treats plastic as a surface by melting various coloured layers of this material that he collects from his own house, the beach, and the streets. Through this technique he transforms discarded packaging and shopping bags into two-dimensional canvases. The frames of the canvases are made of discarded wood, entirely hand-cut and designed to act as a contrasting element to the plastic canvases.
Fiumani is an artist in continuous search of new techniques and materials. This characteristic is visible in some of his works where he inserts video screens and/or LED neons behind recycled plastic in order to create a bridge between technology, art, and pollution. Plastic is the main material used in his new works, a choice that seeks to draw a parallel between society and disposable values.
The main element appearing in Fiumani’s works is a mask, sometimes inspired by superheroes, others by revolutionary figures. The plastic mask symbolises a prescribed social role, which serves to hide the contradictions of a relationship or a social order. The idea behind this is that the true mask is our everyday face, with all of our restrictions, limitations, and fears. If we put a real mask on, it means we can actually let go of our control. Paradoxically, a real mask means we can be who we really are.
