Established in 2010 and consolidated in its present form in 2013, Underdogs works with a diversified roster of Portuguese and international artists connected with the urban inspired contemporary art universe, fostering the development of close relationships between creators, the public, and the city with the aim of promoting art as an everyday experience.
In this urban art intervention entitled "Diente de oro", Spanish artist Escif creates a dialogue with its surroundings, establishing a relationship between the different existing elements: the compositions added to the space and those that make up the space itself.
Each image added to the wall holds the same value as the graffiti that was already there.
Furthermore, this mural establishes a direct link with "Está lloviendo", the artist's most recent solo exhibition at the Gallery: "There is no hierarchy and the mural generates and respects the declassification of spaces where leaks occur and everything is linked. It is dialogue muralism, which takes as its starting point what is or what already exists and builds through trees of relationships."
Escif comes from Valencia, Spain, where he started painting graffiti in 1996. Making murals, public interventions, video, installations and drawings, he tries to understand how to experiment life as an open process of knowledge and knowledge as an open process to experiment life. He doesn't believe in art as a meaning in and of itself and uses it as an excuse to approach different concepts such as the street, the economy, social movements, organic food, macropolitics and micropolitics. His work is usually considered to exist on a strange border between popular and conceptual art.
Throughout 2021 and 2022, the Underdogs Public Art Programme, which has been transforming public space in Lisbon since 2013 in partnership with the Galeria de Arte Urbana (GAU) and the Lisbon Municipality, is revealing a new format, where artists are invited to create work that raises awareness about urgent issues facing the environment and contemporary society.
