Portugal, 2025

The Inside Out Project is a global participatory art initiative founded by French artist JR after receiving the TED Prize in 2011. Inspired by his large-format street pastings, the project empowers communities worldwide to express their identities and messages through art. Participants capture black-and-white portraits, which are then printed and displayed in public spaces, transforming personal stories into collective visual statements. To date, the project has engaged over 500,000 individuals across more than 150 countries, addressing themes ranging from diversity and social justice to climate change.

Inside Out Lisbon: A Portrait of a City, at Underdogs

In March 2025, Underdogs Gallery proudly led another Lisbon's Inside Out Project action, coinciding with JR's exhibition 'Through My Window'. A mobile photo booth was stationed outside our gallery, inviting hundreds of Lisbon residents to participate by having their portraits taken. These images were then transformed into large-scale posters and pasted across the city, creating a powerful visual tapestry that reflects Lisbon's rich diversity and communal spirit. This initiative not only brought art into the public realm but also fostered a sense of unity and shared identity among participants. By turning the city's walls into a canvas of faces, the project highlighted the unique stories and voices that comprise Lisbon's vibrant community. We extend our thanks to all who contributed to this transformative experience. Your participation helped bring the Inside Out Project's mission to life in our city, demonstrating the profound impact of collective artistic expression.
