Conceived by Underdogs and developed in partnership with the Institut Français, the public art project (No) Borders aims to promote a creative coming together between four Portuguese artists and four French artists, leading to the creation of public art interventions in four coastal sister cities.
– Nazaré (Portugal): Tamara Alves & YZ
– Capbreton (France): Wasted Rita & Elea Jeanne Schmitter
– Porto (Portugal): ±MaisMenos± & RERO
– Bordeaux (France): Add Fuel & L’Atlas
Developed in the scope of the 2022 France-Portugal Season and curated by Pauline Foessel and Alexandre Farto aka Vhils, (No) Borders stands as an open dialogue between both countries. An open door, built from exchanges, visual and poetic comings and goings between creators within a common movement – urban culture – exploring aesthetic and conceptual works that, despite being underlined by evident differences, are encapsulated by a profound complementarity.

The artist duo Wasted Rita and Elea Jeanne Schmitter worked around archives made in Capbreton during confinement. Every day, thanks to a VHS camera, the sunset was recorded and archived, forming a diary of these days, which at times seem all alike. Having wanted to register their collaboration around the territory and their common experiences, they rely on the plasticity of the sunset and the very idea of the experience that one has of it alone or with others, to develop a relational aesthetic, questioning renaissance and sublime. Based on the idea that humans have been more interested in sunsets than their sunrises, these are like a promise of conclusion to all the dramas of the day. They deal with the universal experience of this cycle, belonging to humans as well as to sea and land creatures since the dawn of time. This little death, a little mourning over the achievements or defeats of a day, brings people together around these few minutes of apocalyptic ecstasy.
What do people think about when they’re staring at the sunset? I have a weird obsession with the ocean and its creatures. What do they do for fun? Do they know about Dua Lipa? Do they have bad days? Can they mute their peers?
I’m pretty sure a squid goes viral easier than a pigmy sperm whale, but a pigmy sperm whale has more followers than a sunfish.
What about dolphins? Do they get sad when it’s terrible weather? Do they gather with their loved ones in strategic places to watch the sun go down as well? Is the sea level rise kind of like gentrification? Do they have to move constantly in hopes of finding a better place to live?
