Conceived by Underdogs and developed in partnership with the Institut Français, the public art project (No) Borders aims to promote a creative coming together between four Portuguese artists and four French artists, leading to the creation of public art interventions in four coastal sister cities.
– Nazaré (Portugal): Tamara Alves & YZ
– Capbreton (France): Wasted Rita & Elea Jeanne Schmitter
– Porto (Portugal): ±MaisMenos± & RERO
– Bordeaux (France): Add Fuel & L’Atlas
Developed in the scope of the 2022 France-Portugal Season and curated by Pauline Foessel and Alexandre Farto aka Vhils, (No) Borders stands as an open dialogue between both countries. An open door, built from exchanges, visual and poetic comings and goings between creators within a common movement – urban culture – exploring aesthetic and conceptual works that, despite being underlined by evident differences, are encapsulated by a profound complementarity.

Choosing the title I:REVERSIBLE, for this mural Portuguese artist Tamara Alves and French artist YZ conceived a reference to the ancestral and primarily women-led practice of fish drying in Nazaré. Representing an extension of the exhibition surrounding this theme at the Nazaré Cultural Centre, which aims to promote and preserve this legacy, the mural underlines this issue, giving it public pride of place in the town’s centre. YZ developed a portrait of one of the last Nazaré women who possess this unique knowledge, while Tamara Alves created a composition of a young woman, representing the possibilities for the future, in order to question our relationship with this heritage.
While YZ’s intervention draws attention to the loss of this tradition, leading us to think about what can and should be done to preserve it, Tamara Alves explores the way forward, attributing value to the past and the work of these women, but representing a future where these female bodies hold agency, creating a new narrative where women are in complete control of their decisions and choices, of their futures.
