“Edline is a portrait of a young girl I've known since she was about nine years old. Edline lives in Cormiers, Haiti, where I've been working since the 2010 earthquake. In its immediate aftermath, some friends and I put together a rebuilding initiative and connected with the mango growers in her village. At first we thought we would build one building, maybe two, and just be a part of the immediate rebuilding work – but it soon became clear that this village was a special place, and that a deeper relationship was forming. In 2013 we started working on some after-school programming in the community center for the kids in the village, and that's the genesis of this portrait. Edline, about 12 at the time, participated in a shadow puppet play, with the sun as her character, and the rest of the imagery grew outward from there.” – Swoon
