Conceived by Underdogs and developed in partnership with the Institut Français, the public art project (No) Borders aims to promote a creative coming together between four Portuguese artists and four French artists, leading to the creation of public art interventions in four coastal sister cities.

Developed in the scope of the 2022 France-Portugal Season and curated by Pauline Foessel and Alexandre Farto aka Vhils, (No) Borders stands as an open dialogue between both countries. An open door, built from exchanges, visual and poetic comings and goings between creators within a common movement – urban culture – exploring aesthetic and conceptual works that, despite being underlined by evident differences, are encapsulated by a profound complementarity.
The general themes of the four collaborative interventions reflect on nature and the future of borders, not only in their geographic dimension, but also their conceptual amplitude. In this context, special attention has been given to the complexity of urban borders and the ways in which contemporary creation in urban space plays with the borders of cities. Additionally, and also as a consequence of the coastal geography of the chosen territories, the artists were challenged to explore land and sea borders, and the visible and invisible delimitations that exist within the European Union.
Opening paths for social, cultural, economic and political exploration, (No) Borders aims to accentuate the possibility of a European space that awakens the establishment of reciprocal relationships between people and ideas, heightening the power of artistic intervention as a tool for questioning and a lever for social and geographic cohesion.
