Carlos Guerreiro

Carlos Guerreiro (b. 1969) is a Portuguese graphic designer, illustrator, script writer for comics, and visual artist. After attending the Graphic Design course at IADE university, in Lisbon, from which he dropped out, he began his professional career in 1992 at Daciano da Costa's Risco studio, where he remained until 1996. Between 2000 and 2004 he collaborated with the studio NovoDesign and, in 2009, founded MAGA studio together with two friends. He has developed work close to the music scene, designing CD covers and promo posters for countless bands and musicians, as well as catalogues for events of institutions like the Gulbenkian Foundation. As a script writer for comics he collaborated with various publications, events, and organisations connected with the scene. Closely associated with the project Jovens Criadores organised by the Clube de Artes e Ideias, he designed yearbooks and produced television spots for several editions of its Biennale. In the field of cinema, he was involved in the promotion of films by Portuguese new generation directors, such as Joaquim Sapinho, Miguel Gomes, and Edgar Pêra. The work he is most well-known for is the magazine Belém, produced at the Centro Cultural de Belém by the art critic and curator Alexandre Melo, and published between 1997 and 1999. In 1998 he had the opportunity to expand his interest in collage with a series of 15 posters designed for an itinerant campaign-exhibition of the Instituto do Livro e da Leitura. His work with M2, a graphic arts studio where MAGA has its materials printed, led to a creative partnership which resulted in the project Chapéu which, since 2010, has been contributing towards the promotion of Portuguese design and illustration.
