Speto is one of Brazil’s most influential street artists, and a true pioneer of graffiti in Latin America. Born and raised in São Paulo, he began painting in the late 1980s, when graffiti was still emerging in Brazil, and quickly became known for a style that combined bold lines, vibrant colors, and references drawn from Brazilian culture.

Throughout his career, Speto has built bridges between different worlds. His art is deeply rooted in Brazil, but it also connects with American influences such as hip hop, pop, and urban culture. Music plays a central role in his practice, shaping his rhythm, his compositions, and the energy of his works. For this edition, Speto turns to his own heritage and the women who have marked his personal story.

"Carmelita" presents a powerful Brazilian woman as its central figure. She is strong, almost mystical, and her dress carries an indigenous-inspired pattern that speaks of ancestry, tradition, and resistance. The work celebrates not only femininity but also the resilience of Brazilian identity — an identity that has always been built in dialogue, between past and present, between local roots and global sounds.

Underdogs celebrates the 25th of April with the launch of a special series of editions by seven Portuguese artists who, although they did not experience the revolution firsthand, grew up with its legacy deeply embedded in the fabric of society. This year marks 51 years since the Carnation Revolution — a historical moment that ended decades of dictatorship and restored democracy in Portugal. The works emerged from an invitation by Underdogs to engage in a dialogue with iconic photographs by Alfredo Cunha — one of Portugal’s most important photojournalists. With a sharp and sensitive eye, Cunha captured defining moments of April 25, 1974, immortalising expressions of freedom, confrontation, silence, and hope.

Each artist was invited to choose, reflect on, and respond to one of these images, inviting viewers to step into a portal through time and offering a new, personal reading of the past. Originally presented in the exhibition Portais do Tempo, held at the former Lisnave shipyards in Almada in 2023, these powerful works are now being relaunched as limited editions — produced in the same format and with identical margins. Each edition will be sold at the same price, making them accessible to a wider audience and reaffirming the importance of keeping alive the reflection on what freedom means, and what it continues to mean, today.

In one of Alfredo Cunha’s most iconic photographs, a child stands between intertwined hands — a symbol of communion, vulnerability, and the first moments of freedom. Using an ancestral method of weaving — not with threads, but with photography — Belli creates a piece that speaks of connection, memory, and care. Her work asks: what world are yesterday’s children offering to those of today? Do we still know how to cherish the freedom that was once so newly won? Through this poetic and tactile gesture, Belli invites us to reflect on the meaning of freedom — then, and now.

Ana Malta creates a powerful pictorial reinterpretation of one of Alfredo Cunha’s most iconic photographs: the moment when Salgueiro Maia addresses the photographer, urging him to choose a side. In her painting, Malta carefully selects and paints elements from the original scene — the police car, the military, Terreiro do Paço — while introducing new figures: her “children of April 25th,” the generation born into freedom. Malta paints the scene from the opposite point of view to that of the original photograph, suggesting a shift in perspective — both literal and symbolic.

Emerging from Cody Hudson’s ongoing exploration of form, colour, and the natural world, Human Potential Redux (Farm Land Bird Textile) draws from the visual landscape of rural Wisconsin, where references to barn quilts, weather vanes, farmland, and birds are reduced to a vocabulary of abstract shapes. Built from cut paper forms, the composition moves between pattern and landscape, allowing familiar elements to surface without settling into a fixed representation.

Characteristic of Hudson’s practice, shapes are developed and rearranged intuitively, creating unexpected relationships through repetition, balance, and movement. His graphic language often sits between abstraction and recognition, allowing natural forms and lived environments to reappear in transformed ways. Translated here into screen print, the work evokes both the structure of a textile and a flattened landscape, bringing together folk references, personal observation, and the visual rhythms of the American Midwest.

Emerging from Fintan Magee’s ongoing exploration of the relationship between painting, photography, and lived experience, The Travellers draws on a photograph taken by the artist in the Kyiv metro, where underground stations continue to serve as bomb shelters during the war. Depicting two children absorbed in a television programme while waiting below the city, the work captures a quiet moment in which the routines of everyday life persist amid uncertainty.

Characteristic of Magee’s recent practice, the image is deliberately blurred, dissolving the boundaries between documentation and painterly interpretation. Rather than obscuring the scene, this visual instability becomes a narrative device, evoking both movement and unease. Balancing intimacy with fragility, the work reflects on the resilience of ordinary life while reminding us that beneath moments of apparent normality lies a world shaped by conflict, impermanence, and constant change.

Emerging from Matthew Stone's ongoing exploration of layered realities, this work brings together movement, colour, and gestural forms into a composition where multiple visual and emotional dimensions coexist. Surfaces overlap, painted marks create shifting depths, while material and simulated spaces dissolve into one another, reflecting the complexity of contemporary experience.

Characteristic of Stone's practice, the digital and the physical are not positioned in opposition, but exist as complementary layers within the same pictorial language. Image, gesture, surface, and presence continuously intersect, creating a visual field where complexity gives way to moments of stillness and connection. Balancing movement with quiet contemplation, the work reflects on how, within an increasingly layered world, new ways of being fully human can continue to emerge.
