Influences
Hudson’s visual language is rooted in a lifelong engagement with punk, skateboarding, and zine culture, alongside an ongoing exploration of the elemental possibilities of shape and colour. His hard-edged forms and freeform compositions move between abstraction and recognition, at times suggesting flora, vessels, and other familiar forms while remaining deliberately open-ended.
Through graphic lines, carefully balanced compositions, and a refined colour palette, Hudson explores how seemingly simple shapes can interact to create complex visual and emotional relationships. This continual negotiation between simplicity and complexity, art and design, remains central to his practice.

Emerging from Cody Hudson’s ongoing exploration of form, colour, and the natural world, Human Potential Redux (Farm Land Bird Textile) draws from the visual landscape of rural Wisconsin, where references to barn quilts, weather vanes, farmland, and birds are reduced to a vocabulary of abstract shapes. Built from cut paper forms, the composition moves between pattern and landscape, allowing familiar elements to surface without settling into a fixed representation.
Characteristic of Hudson’s practice, shapes are developed and rearranged intuitively, creating unexpected relationships through repetition, balance, and movement. His graphic language often sits between abstraction and recognition, allowing natural forms and lived environments to reappear in transformed ways. Translated here into screen print, the work evokes both the structure of a textile and a flattened landscape, bringing together folk references, personal observation, and the visual rhythms of the American Midwest.
Working right in between the two worlds of art and design, Cody Hudson knows as no other how to create fine balance between the two. His use of graphic lines, compositions and a refined color palette makes his graphic design look like art, and vice versa. Exploring the elemental use of shapes is at the foreground of Cody’s work, trying to figure out how shapes can work together in perfect harmony. The shapes are elementary, but at the same time immensely complex, and Cody is here to make sense of it all.
